We need your help to convince City Council not to devastate library services.
The proposed 35% cut targets everyone.
It especially targets our most vulnerable citizens. This is how you would be impacted:
  • Children’s programs slashed by 50%
  • Loss of seniors’ services and programs
  • Loss of teen programs
  • Wait lists doubled
  • The end of Quickflicks, hoopla and Kanopy
  • Limited eBooks and eAudiobooks
  • No placing holds on available items
  • More closed days
  • Reduced tech training and support
  • Less staff help at service desks
  • No more Community Outreach Van
  • Closure of Jensen Lakes Library
  • No more STARFest or Writer in Residence program
Facts at your fingertips
  • In 2019 we received funding to open Jensen Lakes Library; since then the Library’s budget has reduced by 7%.
  • We have already cut staff, collections and hours over the last 2.5 years so that we can operate with a zero-growth budget.
  • We are efficient—we know this through an independent audit and by comparing ourselves with similar size libraries in Alberta.
  • The proposed cuts to the Library budget:
    • are disproportionate; no other City services have been targeted with a reduction.
    • will only amount to less than half a percent of the savings City Council is looking for, but will devastate the Library.
    • will only save you, the taxpayer, $16 per year on your taxes—that's less than a small Tim Hortons coffee a month per household.
Contact City Council to tell them of your concern about the proposed cut of 35% to the Library budget.
has tools and email templates to help you. We encourage you to personalize your email for maximum impact—you might want to talk about how important the Library is to you, how much money it saves your household, or why the community needs access to a range of library services.

City Council will vote on the Library budget in November. We have to move quickly to convince Council not to slash Library services for the price of an occasional coffee.
Please contact City Council by Monday, October 31, in advance of their budget deliberations.
